Upcoming Events at the Museum of Monterey
Three Fantastic Openings—One Fantastic Day!
March 8, 2014, from 2-8 p.m.
The Monterey History & Art Association and the Museum of Monterey (MoM) at Stanton Center will host a full day of engaging and wonderful art, science, and history on Saturday March 8th from 2-8pm.
The day of exploration begins at 2 p.m. with the opening “Sea Changes: ACT,” the second installment of our yearlong “Fishing 2014” series guest curated by Dr. Jennifer Colby. “Sea Changes: ACT,” a unique collaborative project of 14 scientists and artists spearheaded by artist Kira Carrillo Corser—with contributions from a growing worldwide community as well—seeks to raise ocean awareness and stewardship. Through paintings, mixed media, photography and video installations the exhibit features events and presentations targeted to motivate the public to appreciate the fishing industry and take action to preserve our ocean environment.
At 4:00 pm in the Museum’s theatre, Corser will lead a panel: “Undersea Experience,” comprised of artists and science experts from NOAA, the Scripps Institute of Oceanography and the California Department of Fish and Game to discuss the effects of pollution and climate change on our ocean resources.
From 5:00-7:00 pm, local photographer Huntington Witherill—a student of Ansel Adams in the 1970s—will unveil “Beyond the Ordinary, An Enduring Legacy of Light.” Featuring beautiful black and white and color photography from his lifetime of travels, Witherill’s style is indicative of a diverse approach to the medium, and his subjects include everything from classic landscapes to botanical still-life, abstracts to digital imaging.
“Etched in Monterey: Yesterday-Today,” is a celebration of the hallowed artistic medium rooted in the history of the Monterey Peninsula. The exhibition highlights our region’s past etching masters while creating a comparison to the work of three local contemporary artists—Justin Ward, Denese Sanders and Dora Lisa Rosenbaum—all of whom maintain the highest level of technical abilities within the medium.
Three fantastic exhibit openings and one panel of experts packed into one not-to-be-missed day. Please join us for an event celebrating art, marine science, and history in the place we call home.
